To live an excellent life, one must understand the foundational pillars that support true virtue, reason, purpose, and connection. In this discourse, we delve into these four fundamental elements that collectively foster a life of extraordinary significance. By exploring how these pillars interrelate, we illuminate the path toward not merely existing, but flourishing with intention and meaning. Our discussion aims to equip you with the necessary tools to embark on your personal journey toward excellence, whether you find yourself adrift in search of direction or striving for a more purposeful existence. We invite you to contemplate and develop these principles, recognizing that excellence is not a fixed destination, but rather an evolving journey that enriches every facet of life.
The pursuit of an excellent life encapsulates a profound inquiry into the essence of human existence. It is a question that transcends mere materialism, urging one to delve into deeper philosophical realms. The exploration begins with the identification of four cardinal pillars that serve as the foundational elements of excellence: virtue, reason, purpose, and connection. These pillars are not isolated constructs; rather, they interweave and support one another in the journey toward a flourishing life. Virtue emerges as the moral compass, guiding one’s actions and decisions, while reason provides the logical framework through which one can navigate complex situations. Purpose acts as a guiding star, illuminating the path of one’s endeavors, and connection underscores the inherent social nature of humanity, reminding us that excellence is seldom a solitary pursuit. The interplay of these elements cultivates an environment where excellence may organically manifest, fostering a continuous journey rather than a finite destination. This episode encourages listeners to reflect on their personal understanding of these concepts, ultimately guiding them toward a more intentional and meaningful existence.

Speaker AWelcome to Live well and Flourish, the podcast that helps you live an excellent life.
Speaker AI'm here for that one reason to help you live an excellent life.
Speaker ANot just a good life, not just a successful life, but a truly excellent life.
Speaker AAnd yeah, I'll admit, I also love thinking about these big questions.
Speaker ABefore you can live an excellent life, you have to understand what that means.
Speaker AI suppose you could stumble onto excellence by accident, but that's not likely.
Speaker AWhat does it mean to live an excellent life?
Speaker ADespite the thousands of years of effort by philosophers, the truth is, nobody knows, or more precisely, nobody knows what an excellent life is for you.
Speaker AThat's something you have to figure out for yourself.
Speaker AIf you truly seek excellence, you'll never stop pondering what it means to live an excellent life.
Speaker ASo the question of excellence is a big one and an important one.
Speaker AI can't tell you what it means for you to be excellent, but I can give you a start on figuring it out.
Speaker AThe good news, really good news, is that even though you may never fully understand what excellence means in your life, you'll live more excellently just for having pondered the question.
Speaker ARemember, excellence isn't a destination, it's a journey.
Speaker ATo help you along your journey, I'm going to give you my framework for living an excellent life.
Speaker AThis is a framework, not a recipe.
Speaker AIn other words, I'm going to give you the foundational principles of excellence as I see them.
Speaker AYou're going to have to fill in the details through learning, attention, and reflection.
Speaker ABy doing so, you'll create the conditions that let excellence emerge naturally.
Speaker AThere are four elements to my excellence framework.
Speaker AFour pillars supporting a life of excellence.
Speaker AI've thought a lot about this and tried to keep things straightforward, although I wouldn't call it simple.
Speaker AMy pillars of excellence align with and pull from different philosophies as interpreted by me, combined with my own reflections here are my virtue, reason, purpose and connection.
Speaker AVirtue is about being the kind of person you should be morally.
Speaker AVirtue is the absolute bedrock of excellence.
Speaker AVirtue is also what drives your actions, your decisions, and to an extent, even your thoughts and how you view the world.
Speaker ATo understand virtue, you have to understand what it means to be a good person.
Speaker ATo me, virtues are the characteristics of a good person that make them courage, kindness, wisdom, honesty.
Speaker AThe list is slightly different for everybody.
Speaker AThe Stoics, for example, have four cardinal wisdom, courage, justice and temperance.
Speaker ABen Franklin had 13 virtues that he pursued.
Speaker AYou'll have a different list, one that may keep adapting throughout your life.
Speaker AThe main point here is that to be a good person, you have to understand what a good person is.
Speaker AOthers lists can get you started, but at the end of the day, your list is your list.
Speaker AThe second pillar is reason, as in the use of one's ability to think logically.
Speaker AReason, in this context is the application of thoughtful reflection to guide action.
Speaker AIn other words, it's thinking about what the right action is in any situation.
Speaker AReason is about logic.
Speaker ABut it's not just about logic.
Speaker AIt's about logic directed at the right goal.
Speaker AThat's where virtue comes back into play.
Speaker AVirtue guides what right action means.
Speaker ABut virtue and reason aren't enough.
Speaker AYou also need a purpose.
Speaker AAristotle wrote about excellence in terms of living according to nature, but he didn't mean nature is in the natural environment.
Speaker AAt least not just the natural environment.
Speaker AHe means the true nature of being human.
Speaker AI believe, and many others would agree, that it is in the nature of humans to live in pursuit of some purpose.
Speaker AThat purpose may never be fully achieved, but it should always be the star that guides your life's journey.
Speaker AConnection the final element of my framework also relates to the nature of humans.
Speaker AHumans are social creatures.
Speaker AWe feel a sense of unease when we lack connections to others.
Speaker AThis is an element of many ancient philosophies, and it's an element of modern psychology as well.
Speaker ATo live life well, you need relationships with other humans.
Speaker AWell, that's my list.
Speaker AI've thought about other elements, such as mindfulness and acceptance, but I think these are embedded in the ones that I presented.
Speaker AOr maybe they amplify those.
Speaker AAlthough I presented these separately, they really work together.
Speaker AVirtue serves as your moral compass and foundation.
Speaker AIt defines the values that guide all your decisions and actions.
Speaker AWithout virtue, the other pillars might lead you astray.
Speaker APurpose without ethical boundaries could justify harmful actions.
Speaker AReason without moral grounding could become cold Calculation and connection without virtue might lead to toxic relationships.
Speaker AReason serves as the practical application of your virtues.
Speaker AIt helps you determine how to live virtuously in complex situations, how to effectively pursue your purpose, and how to navigate relationships thoughtfully.
Speaker AReason without the other pillars would just be directionless intellect.
Speaker AThat was not easy to say.
Speaker ADirectionless intellectual purpose provides direction and meaning.
Speaker AIt channels your virtuous character and reasoned thinking towards meaningful goals that align with your values.
Speaker AIt gives you something to strive for that transcends immediate pleasures or concerns.
Speaker AWithout purpose, virtue and reason might exist without direction and connections might lack depth.
Speaker AConnection grounds everything in human relationships.
Speaker AIt reminds you that excellence is not a solitary pursuit.
Speaker AIt's a pursuit that emerges within community.
Speaker AConnections provide feedback to your virtues, challenge your reasoning, and sometimes contribute to your sense of purpose.
Speaker AWithout connection, the other pillars might become theoretical rather than lived experiences.
Speaker AThe real magic happens when these things work together in each, supporting and strengthening the others.
Speaker AYour virtues shape what purpose you find worthy.
Speaker AYour purpose directs how you apply reason.
Speaker AYour purpose and virtues direct how you apply reason.
Speaker AYour reason helps you cultivate virtuous character.
Speaker AAnd your connections provide context for virtues, purpose and reasoning.
Speaker AThis creates a self reinforcing system where growth in one area naturally promotes growth in the others, helping excellence emerge organically over time rather than through forced effort.
Speaker ASo how do these pillars work together in practice?
Speaker AWhen balanced and in harmony, they create a foundation for excellence that's both stable and flexible.
Speaker AThis isn't about perfection, it's about integration.
Speaker AOn days when you feel lost, focus on connection.
Speaker AWhen you feel ethically challenged, return to your virtues.
Speaker AWhen you're confused, engage your reason.
Speaker AAnd when you feel adrift, reconnect with your purpose.
Speaker AExcellence emerges not from mastering each pillar separately, but from the ongoing interplay between them.
Speaker AIt's in that balanced interplay that an excellent life takes shape.
Speaker AHere's what I want you to take away from all of this.
Speaker ALiving an excellent life isn't about following someone else's recipe or checking off items on a list.
Speaker AIt's about understanding and developing these four fundamental aspects of human flourishing.
Speaker AVirtue, reason, purpose, and connection.
Speaker AWhen you work on these pillars together, excellence emerges naturally.
Speaker ANot as a destination you'll reach one day, but as a way of being that grows stronger with every step of your journey.
Speaker AYou can't force excellence, but you can create the conditions that allow it to emerge.
Speaker AUntil next time, stay excellent, my friends.
